On 25 April 2019 Cyclone Kenneth hit the northern Mozambique region. Damage is still being assessed after winds which reached over 140 mph in places, and this has been followed by exceptionally heavy rains. Please pray for the rain to cease. Our Iris Global bases in and around Pemba have not been badly damaged by the cyclone, and the Iris family is helping the authorities and local people. Houses in the wider area, some of which had roofs ripped off in the wind, are now in danger of being washed away in flooding. We pray for God’s mighty hand of protection over the people of the area. You can give to support Iris relief efforts here quoting ‘cyclone relief’ in the message section.

Cyclone Idai: Mozambique

On March 14, Cyclone Idai made landfall in Beira, Mozambique bringing up to 18 inches of rain, 124 mph winds, and a 6-foot storm surge to the low-lying area devastating the region home to more than 600,000 people. Our ministry center in nearby Dondo sustained substantial damage, but had prepared for the storm by collecting basic supplies. They, along with an Iris Relief team, are currently providing food and shelter for over 200 people left homeless by the cyclone.

We are grateful our Iris airplane was able to be one of the first planes in to the area carrying more supplies and volunteers, our center in Pemba is sending down over 500,000 meals, and the teams in Maputo have also been gathering donations to send to their countrymen. We expect to use the plane a lot in the coming days and weeks as roads, bridges, and other infrastructure has been severely damaged making most other travel impossible.

The cyclone has affected a total of 1.5 million people in both Mozambique and Malawi. There are still tens of thousands of displaced people and the president of Mozambique expects the death toll to reach over one thousand. Our team is uniquely positioned to aid in the immediate recovery, but their greatest needs are food, water, and shelter. We are also committed to the long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts that will surely require extraordinary resources.

We remember with great hope the revival that followed the tragic floods in 2000 and keep our eyes on Jesus in this difficult time.

If you wish to give to support the Iris Relief efforts you can do so by donating through Iris Global UK, and we will pass on your gifts, and Gift Aid if you make a declaration, to Iris Relief. Please go to our donate page to do this.
